What a weekly USPS fuel surcharge does to your eBay profit
USPS has announced a fuel surcharge on Ground Advantage that changes every week. It starts in January, and nobody outside USPS knows the percentage yet. Here is what a few possible percentages would do to a $24 sale.
Every figure on this page is a scenario. USPS has not published surcharge percentages. The 5%, 8% and 12% below are assumptions picked to show a range. They are not forecasts, and they are not USPS numbers.
What USPS has said so far
- The surcharge covers Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Parcel Select, and starts in January 2027.
- It resets weekly from U.S. Energy Information Administration fuel prices. Ground Advantage follows diesel.
- It is a percentage of base postage. Extra services and nonstandard fees are left out.
- Each week's percentage is posted three to five days before it applies to diesel-based services.
- Not published yet: the starting percentage, the formula, and whether there is a minimum or maximum.

Reading the table
- 1 lb: a 12% surcharge adds $1.40, about 16% of the $8.64 that was left.
- 3 lb: the same 12% adds $1.88, about 41% of the $4.64 that was left.
- 5 lb: even 5% adds $0.94, about 63% of the $1.49 that was left. At 8% the sale no longer covers the fee and the label, before you count the item.
The percentage is the same on every row. What changes is the postage it is applied to, so a heavier box on the same $24 takes the bigger hit.
What these numbers do not cover
- Zone. Zone 5 is one point on the map. At 1 lb, postage runs from $10.05 in Zone 1 to $13.65 in Zones 8 and 9. At 5 lb it runs from $13.75 to $27.45.
- Retail versus label prices. These are USPS retail prices. Labels bought online are usually priced lower, so the same percentage costs fewer dollars.
- The starting price. Today's retail prices include a temporary 8% transportation increase and a holiday increase, both scheduled to end January 17, 2027. USPS has not said what base prices will be when the fuel surcharge starts. We used today's prices as the base. If the base is lower, every dollar figure here is too high.
- The fee. eBay's fee is also charged on shipping and sales tax collected from the buyer, and rates differ by category and for Store sellers. We assumed free shipping and no tax.
- Everything after the label. Item cost, packing, supplies and returns are not in these figures.
