How eBay works out its fees

When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee: a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, the shipping and handling the buyer pays and sales tax, plus a per order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 above that. The percentage depends on the category and on whether you have an eBay Store. eBay doesn't add a separate payment processing fee.

On top of that you may pay insertion fees once your free listings for the month are used, optional listing upgrades such as Bold or a subtitle, a Promoted Listings ad fee when a sale comes through a general strategy ad, and a 1.65% international fee when the buyer is outside the US and the item isn't shipped through eBay International Shipping.

Questions

Does eBay charge its fee on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. The final value fee and the Promoted Listings ad fee are worked out on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping and handling the buyer pays and sales tax. If you offer free shipping, there's no shipping charge in that total.

Do I pay less with an eBay Store?

With a Basic, Premium, Anchor or Enterprise Store, most categories have a lower percentage, and the top band starts at $2,500 instead of $7,500 for most categories. A Starter Store pays the same final value fees as no Store. Stores also come with more free listings each month, and a monthly subscription this calculator doesn't include.

What doesn't this calculator include?

The extra final value fees eBay charges sellers rated Below Standard or with a very high rate of "item not as described" returns, the $20 dispute fee, currency conversion, Store subscriptions, fee credits after a refund or cancellation, and orders with more than one item. Vehicles, real estate and eBay Live sales have their own fees.

How is the markdown floor worked out?

With the same eBay fees as the calculator: we try prices a cent apart and find the lowest one from which every higher price still makes the profit you want. Above $10.00 the per order fee goes from $0.30 to $0.40, so a price a few cents over $10 can make a little less than one just under it; the floor leaves those prices out.

How current are these fees?

They were read from eBay's Selling fees and Store selling fees pages on October 15, 2026, and the ad fee from eBay's General campaign strategy (Promoted Listings) page. When eBay changes its fees, we update the calculator and this date.
